Shirakawa-go's thatched farmhouses are lit up on only four winter evenings, and you can't just turn up: every visitor on those nights needs an advance reservation. The booking windows are open right now, so this page is about one thing, getting you in.
The 2027 light-up runs on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, from 17:30 to 19:30. There are no same-day tickets. You get in with a village lodging plan (lottery), a reserved parking space for your own car or a taxi, or a seat on a bus tour. For most overseas visitors a tour from Nagoya or Takayama is the realistic route. Bus-company tours for January 24 went on sale on October 26 and for January 31 on November 2 (14:00 Japan time). The famous view from the observation deck is only included with lodging plans and some bus-company tours.

This is the 41st light-up, held in the Ogimachi area of Shirakawa Village in Gifu. The organizers can cancel a night if a severe cold wave seriously disrupts transport, so pick a refundable option where you can.
The five ways to get in (and which include the observation deck)
The official notice lists five routes. Only the first and some of the fourth come with an observation deck ticket, and deck tickets aren't sold on their own.
| Option | How you book | Observation deck? | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Village lodging plan | Email lottery run by the Tourist Association; applications close October 31, 2026, 23:59; results November 10 | Yes | Anyone who wants to stay the night (very few rooms) |
| 2. Reserved parking, own car | Online, first come, first served. Round 2 opens December 1, 2026, 13:00: ¥7,000 for 1–5 people, ¥10,000 for 6–10 | No | Drivers comfortable on snowy mountain roads |
| 3. Taxi with reserved parking | Reserve parking first, then arrange the taxi | No | Small groups without a car |
| 4. Highway bus company tour | Directly with Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chihou Railway, Hokutetsu Bus or Iruka Kotsu | Depends on the tour | People who can book Japanese bus sites |
| 5. Travel agency bus tour | With the agency, including tours sold on Klook | No | Most international visitors |
Round 1 of parking went on sale on September 10 (¥6,000 / ¥9,000). Parking can't be cancelled or refunded unless the organizers cancel the event, all vehicles need studless winter tires, and the lot is for regular cars only, not camper vans or buses.
Shirakawa-go light-up tours from Nagoya and Takayama
Without a car or a lucky lottery result, a tour is the simplest way in. Most English-language tours leave from Nagoya, often stopping in Takayama's old town on the way, and get back late at night. One 2027 tour on Klook, for example, runs from 09:00 to 22:30 (13.5 hours) and gives a full refund only if you cancel at least 60 days before the date. In late October 2026 Klook listed light-up tours from about US$66 to about US$183, mostly from Nagoya, with a few small-group and Takayama departures.
Check Shirakawa-go light-up tours from Nagoya on Klook (opens in a new tab)
Before you pay, check three things on the tour page:
- The date. Each tour runs only on the four light-up nights, and seats go date by date.
- Whether the observation deck is included. Under the official rules, travel-agency tours don't come with deck tickets, so expect to see the village from the lanes, not the classic hilltop view.
- The cancellation terms. Many have long cutoffs (60 days is common), which matters if your flights aren't fixed yet.
Already planning Takayama? There's also a half-day light-up tour from Takayama on Klook (opens in a new tab), which listed from about US$83, and saves you the long ride from Nagoya. If you go that way, compare Takayama hotels on Klook (opens in a new tab) early, since the light-up nights are busy.
Rules on the night
- Everyone gets a date-colored admission ticket on a neck holder and must wear it in the event area. People without one are asked to leave.
- The entry gate starts checking tickets from 15:30.
- Drones and filming are banned (it's a residential village), and tripods and pets aren't allowed at the observation deck.
- Viewing at the deck is split into three sessions, and you can't choose yours.
- Stopping, parking or dropping people off anywhere outside the designated areas can get the driver (and their company) banned from future events.
The official notice warns that it can be about −10°C to 0°C with icy paths. Waterproof insulated boots, traction spikes or grippy soles, warm layers and a small flashlight are on its list, and our Japan winter packing list covers the rest.
No reservation? Visit Shirakawa-go in the daytime
On light-up days you can still visit during the day without a reservation, but you must leave before the event starts:
- By car: the lot opens at 8:00, last entry is 15:00 and everyone must be out by 17:00. The organizers strongly suggest arriving by noon.
- By highway bus: the last regular departures leave around 16:00–17:00, and no regular buses run after the event.
- Observation deck: no private cars all day; a shuttle runs uphill 9:00–15:40, or walk up in about 15–20 minutes behind Wada House.
Snow-covered Shirakawa-go in daylight is still the postcard view, and on non-event days none of these restrictions apply. If you're flexible, that's a good plan B.
Fitting the light-up into a winter trip
January 11 is the only holiday date (it was moved to the Monday of a three-day weekend), and it was the first to go on sale. The three Sunday dates suit a loop such as Tokyo – Nagoya – Takayama – Kanazawa – Kyoto. For everything else that sells out in winter (Sapporo Snow Festival hotels, New Year trains, snow monkey tickets), see what to book in advance for a Japan winter trip, and for weather that month, Japan in January.

Shirakawa-go light-up questions
Can I buy a ticket for the Shirakawa-go light-up on the day?
No. The official notice says visitors without an advance reservation won't be allowed in, and admission tickets aren't sold on the day.
Do Klook tours include the observation deck?
Generally not. Deck tickets come only with village lodging plans and some highway bus company tours; the official rules say travel-agency tours don't include them. Read each tour's inclusions.
Can I drive to the light-up?
Yes, if you reserve designated parking (round 2 goes on sale December 1, 2026 at 13:00 Japan time) and your car has studless winter tires. Parking is non-refundable unless the event is cancelled.
How do I stay overnight in Shirakawa-go on a light-up night?
Through the Tourist Association's lodging lottery, which closes on October 31, 2026 at 23:59. Winners hear on November 10. Rooms are few, so have a tour or daytime visit as a backup.
Our take
If you want the light-up, book a tour for your date now and check its cancellation terms. If January 11 or 17 are already full, aim for the 24th or the 31st, and if all else fails, see Shirakawa-go by day and spend the evening in Takayama.
