Christmas in Japan looks familiar (trees, lights, carols in shops) but works very differently. It's a commercial and romantic celebration rather than a family or religious holiday, and the big traditions are fried chicken, strawberry cake and winter light shows. Here's what to expect in 2026 and which events have announced their dates.

Quick answer: Christmas is not a public holiday in Japan: shops, sights and trains run normally on 24–25 December. Christmas Eve is a popular date night, so book restaurants early. KFC Christmas meals are pre-ordered weeks ahead, and Christmas cakes are reserved from autumn. For lights, Tokyo Midtown (26 Nov–25 Dec 2026) and Roppongi Hills (5 Nov–25 Dec 2026) are free. The Tokyo Christmas Market runs at Shin-Toyosu (20 Nov–25 Dec) and Shiba Park (4–25 Dec), with paid entry.

Is Christmas a holiday in Japan?

No. 25 December is a normal working day, and most Japanese people don't treat Christmas as a religious occasion. For visitors that's mostly good news: museums, shops and transport all run as usual. The things that do change:

The KFC Christmas tradition (and how ordering works)

Eating Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas is one of Japan's best-known festive customs, the result of a long-running KFC marketing campaign. It's popular enough that KFC Japan runs a pre-order system every year.

Convenience stores and supermarkets also sell fried chicken over Christmas, and you can just walk in and buy it.

Christmas cake

A Japanese Christmas cake is usually a light sponge with whipped cream and strawberries. Bakeries, department stores and convenience stores all take orders. In 2026, 7-Eleven opened Christmas reservations on 14 September, with pick-up from 19 to 25 December. If you can't pre-order, look for cut slices or small cakes at bakeries and convenience stores on the day. Some shops discount leftover cakes on the evening of the 25th.

Best Christmas illuminations in 2026

Japan's winter illuminations are its real Christmas spectacle. City-centre displays are usually free; theme-park-style shows charge admission.

Tokyo

Tokyo Midtown's 2026 theme is "Midwinter Night's Dream", with a bubble-filled light show in the garden (until 20 December), an 8.5 m real fir tree and a gold "Light Promenade". An outdoor ice rink opens from 5 December 2026. Nearby, Roppongi Hills lights its Keyakizaka avenue in white and blue (about 970,000 LEDs over 400 m), and you can see Tokyo Tower at the end of the street. The two are a 10–15 minute walk apart, so they're easy to combine. Marunouchi lines Naka-dori with champagne-gold lights; its 2026 dates weren't out in early October, but it has run from mid-November into February in recent seasons. Check the official site.

If you'd rather not plan a route yourself, KKday lists a December open-top bus tour that passes several central illuminations, including Midtown, Keyakizaka and Marunouchi. Check which dates it runs in 2026 before booking.

Yomiuriland Jewellumination is a large illumination inside an amusement park in west Tokyo, reached by Keio Line trains from Shinjuku. In 2026–27 it runs from 29 October to 4 April, usually 16:00–20:30 (times vary, and there are no illuminations on weekdays from 1 to 12 March 2027). It's a good choice if you're with children, since many rides keep running in the evening.

Beyond Tokyo

Nabana no Sato near Nagoya is one of Japan's biggest light shows, famous for its long tunnel of lights. The 2026–27 season runs from 17 October to 31 May. Last season, visits from 15:00 on 23–25 December needed a date-specific ticket bought in advance, so expect similar rules this Christmas. It's awkward to reach by public transport in the evening, which is why many visitors book a bus tour from Nagoya.

Sapporo White Illumination, running since 1981, lights Odori Park from 20 November to 25 December 2026. The Ekimae-dori and Minami-Ichijo sites stay lit until 11 February and 14 March 2027. Kobe Luminarie is no longer a December event; the 2027 edition runs from 29 January to 7 February, with a paid area (advance ¥500 weekdays / ¥750 weekends).

Christmas markets in 2026

German-style Christmas markets, with mulled wine, sausages and wooden stalls, have become very popular in Japan. Several have confirmed their 2026 dates:

Frequently asked questions

Are shops and attractions open on Christmas Day in Japan?

Yes. Christmas isn't a public holiday, so shops, museums, theme parks and transport run normally. Many illuminations and Christmas markets have their last night on 25 December.

Why do Japanese people eat KFC at Christmas?

It goes back to a successful KFC marketing campaign that linked fried chicken with Christmas. Today it's so popular that KFC Japan takes pre-orders from around early November.

Do I need tickets for Christmas illuminations in Japan?

City displays like Midtown, Roppongi Hills, Marunouchi and Sapporo are free. Theme-park shows (Yomiuriland, Nabana no Sato) charge entry. Nabana required advance date-specific tickets for 23–25 December last season, and the Tokyo Christmas Market recommends buying advance tickets.

Is Kobe Luminarie on at Christmas?

No. It now takes place in late January to early February. The 2027 dates are 29 January to 7 February.

Bottom line

Christmas in Japan is about lights, markets and food rather than family gatherings. Go in early to mid-December for thinner crowds, pre-book anything for 23–25 December (dinners, Nabana tickets, Christmas market entry), and remember that 25 December is an ordinary working day.
