Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an island in Osaka Bay. It's about 35–50 minutes from central Osaka by train and about 75 minutes from Kyoto. The best route depends on which part of the city you're staying in. Namba and Umeda are served by different train lines.
- To Namba, Dotonbori or Shinsaibashi: Nankai Rapi:t (about 35–40 min, reserved seats), or the cheaper Nankai Airport Express (about 45 min).
- To Umeda/Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: JR Haruka (about 50 min). Foreign visitors can buy a discounted one-way ticket.
- To Kyoto: JR Haruka direct to Kyoto Station (about 75 min). Take the limousine bus if you have heavy bags and your hotel is near a bus stop.
- Families, groups or late arrivals: a pre-booked private transfer.
KIX to Namba (southern Osaka)
| Option | Time | Fare (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nankai Rapi:t (limited express) | About 35–40 min | About ¥1,490 for a regular seat; discounted online tickets (around ¥1,350) are sometimes available | All seats reserved, luggage racks, runs about every 30 min |
| Nankai Airport Express | About 45 min | About ¥970 | No reservation needed, tap an IC card. Can be crowded at rush hour |
| Limousine bus to Namba (OCAT) | About 50–60 min | About ¥1,300 | Bags go under the bus |
The Rapi:t is a comfortable, fast option for Namba, and booking online lets you skip the ticket queue. Travelling light? The Airport Express on the same line is almost as fast and costs noticeably less.

KIX to Umeda, Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka
| Option | Time | Fare (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JR Haruka (limited express) | About 50 min to Osaka, 55 min to Shin-Osaka | ¥1,800 with the HARUKA One-way Ticket for foreign visitors; regular reserved fare is considerably higher | Direct, large luggage space, stops at Tennoji |
| JR Kansai Airport Rapid | About 65–70 min to Osaka | About ¥1,200 | No surcharge, but slower and can be crowded |
| Limousine bus to Osaka Station area | About 60 min or more | About ¥1,800 | Good with big bags; depends on traffic |
At Osaka Station, Haruka uses the newer underground platforms on the Umekita (north-west) side, a few minutes' walk from the main concourse, so allow a little extra time. Haruka is also convenient for Shin-Osaka if you're catching a shinkansen onward.
KIX to Kyoto
| Option | Time | Fare (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JR Haruka | About 75 min | ¥2,200 with the HARUKA One-way Ticket; the regular reserved fare is over ¥3,000 | Direct to Kyoto Station, no transfers |
| Limousine bus | About 90 min or more | About ¥2,800 | Door to Kyoto Station, bags stowed |
| Shared shuttle (door to door) | Varies, often 2 hours or more | About ¥4,000–¥5,000 per person | Book ahead (often 2 days); shared with other passengers |
| Private transfer / taxi | About 90 min | Expensive; split for groups | Door to door, any hour |
For most visitors headed to Kyoto, the Haruka with the foreign-visitor ticket is the best value. It's direct, fast and much cheaper than the regular fare.
The HARUKA One-way Ticket
JR West sells a discounted HARUKA One-way Ticket to foreign passport holders entering Japan as temporary visitors. Adult prices listed by JR West in October 2026 are ¥1,300 to Tennoji, ¥1,800 to Osaka, Shin-Osaka or Nara, ¥2,000 to Kobe and ¥2,200 to Kyoto. Children pay half. It's sold as a WEST QR ticket through travel agencies outside Japan, such as Klook, not at Japanese travel agencies or on JR West's domestic online booking site. You activate the QR code on your phone on the travel day and scan it at the ticket gate, so you need mobile data on arrival. The old "ICOCA & HARUKA" bundle has ended. You buy the ICOCA card separately now. Check the current terms before you buy.

ICOCA: your IC card for Kansai
ICOCA is JR West's rechargeable IC card. It works like Suica and PASMO in Tokyo, and those cards also work in Kansai. Tap it on trains, subways and buses across Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara, and use it to pay at convenience stores. You can buy an ICOCA at the KIX JR station for about ¥2,000, which includes a ¥500 deposit. iPhone users can also add ICOCA to Apple Wallet. Some resellers, including Klook, also let you pre-order a card and collect it at the airport, but buying at the station works just as well. More on paying in Japan: cash or card in Japan.
Taxis and private transfers
A metered taxi from KIX to central Osaka typically costs around ¥17,000–¥23,000 depending on where you're going. Kyoto is much further and costs considerably more. Some taxi companies offer fixed airport fares if you book in advance.
A pre-booked private transfer, with a driver waiting with your name, is worth considering if:
- you're a family or a group of 3–4, where the per-person cost gets closer to train fares
- you land late at night, after the last Haruka (around 10pm) or the last Rapi:t (around 11pm)
- you have lots of luggage, small children or limited mobility

Arrival-day tips
- Have data before you land so you can check platforms and live times right away. See eSIM vs pocket WiFi.
- Check last departures if you land after 9pm. Rail options thin out quickly.
- Arriving before check-in? Drop your bags near your first stop instead of dragging them around. Find luggage storage in Osaka (opens in a new tab).
- Consider luggage delivery (takkyubin) from the airport to your hotel if you're moving on quickly. Counters are in the arrivals area.
- Flying into Tokyo instead? See Narita & Haneda to Tokyo.
FAQ
Rapi:t or Haruka: which should I take?
It depends on where you're staying. Rapi:t goes to Namba in the south of Osaka. Haruka goes to Tennoji, Osaka Station, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto. Pick whichever drops you closest to your hotel.
What's the cheapest way from KIX to Kyoto?
For foreign visitors, the HARUKA One-way Ticket (about ¥2,200) is both cheap and direct. Slower combinations of local trains are possible, but they rarely save much and involve transfers.
Can I use a Suica card in Osaka?
Yes. Suica, PASMO and ICOCA work across most trains, subways and buses in Kansai, so there's no need for a second card.
Is there a train at midnight?
Generally not. The last Haruka leaves around 10pm and the last Nankai trains around 11pm to midnight. For later arrivals, use a late limousine bus if one runs, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer.
Bottom line
Staying in Namba? Take the Nankai line. Heading to Umeda, Shin-Osaka or Kyoto? Take the Haruka with the discounted foreign-visitor ticket. Groups, late arrivals and heavy packers will usually find a pre-booked transfer worth the extra cost.
