The floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima

Hiroshima is about 90 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen, so the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima's floating torii fit into one long day. It's a full day, though: plan on leaving Osaka by 8:00 and getting back after dark.

The short version: Shinkansen to Hiroshima → Peace Memorial Park and museum in the morning → JR train and ferry to Miyajima → Itsukushima Shrine in the afternoon → back the same way.

  • Train: a Nozomi or Mizuho from Shin-Osaka takes about 1 hour 25–30 minutes. One way costs about ¥11,000 reserved, ¥10,000 unreserved.
  • Pass: two one-way Shinkansen tickets cost more than the JR West Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (¥17,000 for 5 days). If you're not on a nationwide JR Pass, that pass is usually the cheaper way to do this day.
  • Small costs: Peace Memorial Museum ¥200, Itsukushima Shrine ¥300, Miyajima ferry about ¥200 each way plus the ¥100 Miyajima visitor tax.
  • Check the tide for your date. The torii looks like it floats at high tide; you can walk to it at low tide.

Getting from Osaka or Kyoto to Hiroshima

The Sanyo Shinkansen runs from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima several times an hour. Nozomi and Mizuho are fastest. Sakura trains take a few minutes longer and stop more. From Kyoto, take any westbound Shinkansen; Kyoto is one stop (about 15 minutes) before Shin-Osaka.

Shinkansen fares from a 2026 Ekitan fare guide; pass price from JR West's official page; Nozomi supplement from JR Pass reseller tables. JR revises fares, so confirm in a route app or at the station.

The math is simple. A round trip at regular fares runs about ¥20,000–22,000, which is more than the 5-day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass. The pass also covers the JR train to Miyajimaguchi, the JR Miyajima ferry and JR lines around Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara for the other four days. It doesn't cover the Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo. JR West sells it online, through overseas agents and in Japan; its page says prices can change, so check before you buy.

A one-day route through Hiroshima and Miyajima

Do Hiroshima first and Miyajima second. The museum gets busier through the day, and the island is prettier in late-afternoon light. Shrine closing times fall between about 17:00 and 18:00 depending on the season, so check them for your date.

8:00 – Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka

An 8:00 departure puts you in Hiroshima around 9:30. With big luggage, don't haul it around all day. There are coin lockers at Hiroshima Station, and you can find bag storage near Hiroshima Station on Radical Storage (opens in a new tab) if they're full. Our luggage storage guide covers locker sizes.

10:00 – Peace Memorial Park, the A-Bomb Dome and the museum

From the station, take the Hiroden streetcar to the Genbaku Dome-mae stop, a short ride. The A-Bomb Dome, the Children's Peace Monument and the Cenotaph are all free and within a 10-minute walk of each other.

The Peace Memorial Museum costs ¥200 for adults. Hours reported for 2026 are 7:30–19:00 from March to November and 7:30–18:00 from December to February, with closures on December 30–31. Some time slots (in 2025, the first and last hour of the day) need an online reservation. Allow at least 90 minutes. Many visitors need some quiet time afterward, so don't plan a rushed lunch right after.

12:30 – Lunch: Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki

Hiroshima's version layers cabbage, noodles and egg instead of mixing them into a batter. Okonomi-mura, a building full of small okonomiyaki counters, is the best-known place to try it, and there are plenty of counters around the station too.

13:30 – Train and ferry to Miyajima

You have two ways to get to the island:

The streetcar also runs to Miyajimaguchi. It's cheaper than JR but takes roughly twice as long. Either way, the ¥100 Miyajima visitor tax is collected when you board a boat to the island.

14:30 – Itsukushima Shrine and the floating torii

The shrine is about 10 minutes' walk from the Miyajima pier, past the deer. Admission is ¥300 (¥500 with the Treasure Hall). Whether you see the famous "floating" view depends entirely on the tide. The gate appears to float when the tide at Hiroshima Port is above about 250 cm. You can walk out to its base when it drops below about 100 cm. Look up the tide table for your date before you pick a time.

The great torii itself finished its restoration in 2022. The five-story pagoda is under conservation work until December 20, 2026, so expect scaffolding if you visit before then.

16:00 – Omotesando, momiji manju and the trip back

Walk back along Omotesando shopping street for momiji manju (maple-leaf cakes) and grilled oysters. Then take the ferry and train to Hiroshima Station; a Shinkansen around 18:00–19:00 gets you to Osaka in time for dinner. If you'd rather stay, Mt. Misen's ropeway runs from around 9:00, with the last ride up around 16:00 in spring 2026 notices (it reopened in May 2026 after a brief closure). That really needs a second day or an overnight on the island. If you stay, compare Hiroshima and Miyajima hotels on Klook (opens in a new tab), which lists Miyajima ryokan as well as hotels near Hiroshima Station.

On your own or on a guided tour?

Going on your own is cheaper and lets you choose your pace at the museum. A tour makes sense if you want history explained in English, or don't want to manage trains, ferries and tide times yourself.

Frequently asked questions about a Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip

Is one day enough for Hiroshima and Miyajima?

For the highlights, yes: the Peace Park, the museum and Itsukushima Shrine. You won't have time to climb Mt. Misen or see the island in the evening. If those matter to you, stay a night in Hiroshima or on Miyajima.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it just for Hiroshima?

Not on its own. One round trip from Osaka costs less than any nationwide JR Pass. If Hiroshima is your only long trip from Kansai, the regional Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is the better comparison. The nationwide pass only pays off when Hiroshima is part of a bigger loop, such as Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima.

Can I do this as a day trip from Tokyo?

It's possible but not much fun. The Nozomi takes about 4 hours each way, so you'd spend eight hours on trains. Break the journey in Osaka or Kyoto instead; our Tokyo to Kyoto Shinkansen guide covers the first leg.

When is the best time to see the floating torii?

At high tide, which happens at a different time every day. Check a Hiroshima Port tide table for your date. A tide above about 250 cm gives the floating look; below about 100 cm you can walk to the gate.

Our take: which day to pick

Pick a weekday, look up the tide first, and plan the Miyajima half around high tide if you can. If you're not on a nationwide JR Pass, get the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass and use its other four days for Nara and Kobe; see our Osaka day trips guide for ideas.
