Buying too little data means hunting for WiFi on day three. Buying too much wastes money. Here's a simple way to estimate how much you need for Japan.
Typical daily use
| Activity | Approx. data |
|---|---|
| Google Maps / train route apps (a few hours of navigation) | 50–150 MB per day |
| Messaging (WhatsApp, LINE, iMessage, text only) | 10–30 MB per day |
| Uploading 20–30 photos to social media | 100–300 MB |
| Browsing, translation apps, restaurant searches | 100–300 MB per day |
| Video calls (30 minutes) | 300–800 MB |
| Streaming video (1 hour, standard quality) | 500 MB–1 GB+ |
Quick estimate by travel style
- Light user (maps, messaging, a few photos): about 0.3–0.5 GB per day. A 7-day trip needs about 3 GB.
- Average user (plus social media and lots of searching): about 0.7–1 GB per day. A 7-day trip needs about 5–10 GB.
- Heavy user (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 2 GB+ per day. Consider an unlimited plan.
Most hotels have free WiFi, so you mainly need data while out and about during the day.
What it costs
Travel eSIMs for Japan typically cost about $4–8 for 1–3 GB, about $16–18 for 10 GB for 30 days, and about $26–29 for 7 days of unlimited data. For example, Airalo's Japan plans start at around $4.50 for 1 GB.

How to make your data last
- Download offline Google Maps for the cities you'll visit, and Google Translate's Japanese language pack.
- Turn off automatic photo backup and app updates on mobile data.
- Set social media apps to "data saver" mode.
- Most plans let you top up mid-trip, so starting a little lower is fine.
